Academic credits include a BSBA degree from Washington University (St. Louis) in 1958 and a  MBA from New York University, awarded in 1961.  He was recognized by Spalding University with the award of a Honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1984 and Washington University Olin School of Business with a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1987.  In addition, he served as a Trustee of Washington University and has been a guest speaker and panelist at several MBA
programs, including Harvard University in 2001, 2003 and 2006.  He has been a Visiting Professor of Management at the University of Kentucky in 2005 and 2006 and an Executive in Residence at the University of Louisville from 2003 to 2008.

After three  years of active duty service as a U.S. Navy Officer, he had a 28 year career at GE, advancing to the Corporate Executive Board level as Senior Vice President and Corporate Officer in charge of the Company’s 5 billion dollar sales, 54,000 employee Worldwide Appliance Operations. He left GE to become CEO and Chairman of the Ryland Group, a NYSE listed, Fortune 500 national home building (over one billion dollars of new home sales) and mortgage banking company (generating 4 billion of mortgages and servicing over 9 billion of mortgages annually).  The Company also originated collateralized mortgage instruments for investment banking firms and managed a closed end mortgage backed securities mutual fund.  Then, he became CEO and Chairman of the Sunbeam Corporation, a NYSE listed Fortune 500 small ticket consumer durable products Company.

He retired as a twenty five year plus director of Legg Mason, a brokerage and money management firm and the Brunswick Corporation, a a bowling, fitness equipment, boat and marine products company. Additional director positions on other NYSE boards in banking, floor covering, manufactured housing and real estate. International directorships included boards in Canada, England and the Philippines. Chaired committees included audit, finance, human resource and compensation activities.

Social Service on several nonprofit boards, including the Greater Baltimore Development
Committee, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, United Way in Detroit, Louisville, Baltimore
and the Louisville Fund for the Arts.  His public service includes service on the board of the
Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the Kentucky Racing Commission, the Magistrate Judge
selection Committee for the U.S. District Court in Louisville, KY and as an Independent
Public Advocate for Oversight of a major public responder communications project for the
City of Louisville Mayor’s Office.

He and his wife, Joyce, reside in Louisville, KY.  He owns and operates a thoroughbred
breeding business, COLTS LLC. COLTS has bred multiple stakes winning horses and raced several stakes winners including Grade One, multiple graded stakes winner and Breeders Cup performer Ops Smile.
